About the Piece

In the mid-2000s, Starbucks brought new life to a historic Manoa Building, which was built in 1930. Leasing the space and moving in next to long-time tenant and cherished Manoa institution — Andy’s Sandwiches — Starbucks renovated the interior and spruced up the exterior. Not long after opening, Starbucks Manoa became a hub of activity in Manoa. Each morning, families stop by to pick up beverages and food on their way to dropping off kids at Manoa Elementary, Noelani Elementary, MidPac, Punahou and Roosevelt. Professors and students hang out in the cozy interior.

About the Artist

Although I grew up in the Midwest, I moved to Hawaii when I was 23 to start a career as a lawyer. To nurture my creative side, I became a photographer. As a photographer, my subjects tend to be people, nature, the world at night, and Hawaii’s revered places and buildings.

I have spent over three decades in Honolulu and watched as it has changed dramatically: sometimes for the better, and oftentimes for the worse. As a result, I believe in HHF’s mission. In Hawaii, there is so much to cherish, which must not be forgotten or paved over to make way for a parking lot or high-rise condo. That’s why I’m contributing to this project.
